Easy and powerful tool

  • April 18, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's such an easy tool to use. It's so easy that much of our small company has easily adapted it with very minimal training. We use it for ECRs (engineering change requests) actually. We have a PLM but engineering started using it before our document control started and it was so successful that even though we have a PLM, we still use it for ECRs.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is some fields I would like to make to mandatory for just my project, but since we have so many projects, it would make them mandatory throughout.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it for ECRs (engineering change requests) actually. We have an actual PLM tool, but engineering started using it before our document control started and it was so successful, that even though we have a PLM, we still use it for ECRs. It is widely adapted and user friendly.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's a very simple yet powerful tool. I've used it at multiple companies for a variety of uses and at each, it is widely accepted.

Dream to use

  • April 18, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
How it intergrates with the rest of the Atlassian suite.
What do you dislike about the product?
The setup and charging structure - especially on the online cloud solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Jira resolves the time logging and task management for the developments and design teams, amongst both the project management and support teams.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
You get more out of JIRA through using other Atlassian products. This has many benefits but also drawbacks as gets you locked into the Atlassian product cycle. 'Escaping' this becomes somewhat problematic, though fortunately importing data into JIRA especially proved to very easy. Intergrations with other systems were also very good.

Overall, I would recommend doing a thorough cost analysis BEFORE going for the software. Look for license costs (they jump substainally 50+) and other tools that you'd require to complete your objectives. If not, you will not get an accurate cost analysis and will have to add to your budget.

That being said, you do get what you paid for - it's a good product and completes all of our objectives. I only wish that we would have done a proper analysis beforehand, purely to save getting egg on my face as the costs went up later!

Good issue tracking software

  • April 16, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
- Good integration with other Atlassian products
- Good tools for scrum, kanban methodologies
- Customizability of dashboards, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
I did not use too many issue-tracking software to be able to identify shortcomings of Jira, but I can say it is much better than IBM's RTC.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Jira integrates well with other Atlassian products such as Confluence and Stash/Bitbucket. It is our central place for issue-tracking. It supports both scrum and kanban development methodologies.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If your business is using other Atlassian products like Confluence and Bitbucket, then using Jira is a no-brainer. Jira can be the central place for issue-tracking. It can help in both scrum and kanban development methodologies.

We use JIRA for bug tracking, issue tracking, and project management functions.

A Good Tool, but Your Mileage May Vary

  • April 14, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
A rich feature set, many 3rd party integrations, a flexible pricing model and an easy get up and running path make Jira a great tool for many teams and organizations. Beyond satisfying many basic team communication, work organization and product development coordination Jira provides the tools needed through their robust api's for determined tinkers to roll up their sleeves and get the most out of the offering.
What do you dislike about the product?
With all its strengths, I find I'm frustrated by one aspect of Jira or another on a regular basis. Recently, I experienced just how difficult it is to implement a core practice in Scrum: the Definition of "Done." While there are workaround methods of specifying and tracking a DoD, it definitely feels like a hack. Additionally, the permission structure can be daunting to administer. Similarly, the workflows represent a powerful functionality but can quickly become something that will blow your leg off if not tended and administered carefully but teams. The field, issue type and screen system is labyrinthine to navigate and understand. Support from Atlassian itself has been lackluster; I've never been able to get someone on the phone even when I'm experiencing extremely challenging and costly problems with the app, that is without paying a pretty penny for the upgraded support package. Thankfully, the latter delays have been rare.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Jira to house several product backlogs, implementation activities, helpdesk services and workflow disciplines. Reporting on our work is of some use, although we find difficulties using the core reporting offerings and will until we follow Scrum more closely.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try it out with a single team. Resist the urge to customize the projects, workflows and permission schemes at first. Prove out that it brings you the improved communication, coordination and reporting that many others have seen. Your mileage may vary :).
