Rundeck will become the invaluable tool you never knew you needed

  • December 03, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We setup a Rundeck instance years ago, mostly to play around with it. Over time, Rundeck has become completely invaluable. It's a touchpoint between multiple systems that otherwise wouldn't coordinate. Running simple and complex jobs is easy to setup and forget about, and Rundeck will happily keep them going, letting you know if something goes awry. Being able to review a history of job executions is something we rarely need, but when we need it, access to that data is invaluable. And everything can be scheduled to run repeatedly which is fantastic.

Rundeck connects to Jenkins, Salt, and runs scripts managed by rerun. It doesn't operate in a vacuum and that is its strength. Any job you need to run periodically, or provide a cleared self-service GUI or API into, use Rundeck. You'll soon find it's invaluable to your organization.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the recent GUI changes are a bit meh. Overall, the interface has grown and improved over the years. But the UI to access edit screens, whether the cancel or confirm button is first, and navigating between executions is inconsistent and less clear than in previous releases. I haven't raised any issues, as these are minor annoyances, but cleaning them up would make a great tool even better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We do more with less. The hardest part is taking the 5 extra minutes to wrap a repetitive task into a Rundeck job. That's not a slight on Rundeck, but more a comment on how even the smallest routine tasks can and should be easily automated with Rundeck.

We have some jobs that are nearly ready for self-service IT processes. When time allows, making these available to non-IT users will be fantastic and reduce load on our IT team.

Rundeck is truly the glue that holds it all together.

What do you like best about the product?
It's intuitive, quick to setup, easy to customize
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it's hard to do complex things. They are usually possible but require a few google searches
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
No problems - It allows my team to operate with fewer people thanks to the automation
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's probably the best open source solution there is. I looked at a lot of options while going through procurement

What do you like best about the product?
I love Rundeck acl's and the full automation idea.
What do you dislike about the product?
Acl's creation when you work with ldap groups isn't user friendly until you catch it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We stopped using the crontab of every server, instead of that we started to automatice al tasks with rundeck and his scheduler, so we dont need to start searching things on every server.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
We need better doc on line.
