Updated: Still free and bursting with features (even if it did use to be cooler)

  • May 25, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
As of May 2023 I am still impressed with how much you can get from Netlify for free. They integrate well with frameworks like next.js, supporting most/all features as they are released. Netlify functions are flexible, powerful, and available without the hassle of setting up AWS lambdas (which they end up running as IIRC). Edge functions, background functions, and ISR-style on-demand builder functions give me the tools I need to optimize our API and build performance.

I can craft an enterprise-grade solution in place for $0 - I don't even think they have my credit card. This makes things so much simpler and easier to try out, throw away, and eventually scale up.

Netlify's out-of-the-box experience, full feature set, and generous free tier make it my go-to for starting new projects.

---

Netlify is easy to set up and works well with a lot of frameworks out of the box. Sites start out free which makes learning the platform easy and fun. They release new features regularly, keeping up with the current state of the web. Features like edge functions and (well cached) on-demand builders help to increase the performance and capabilities of the apps we build on the platform.
What do you dislike about the product?
Update May 2023 - below is still accurate, and I still feel a little burned by it, but the issue is probably of little concern to new customers. When it happened, there was quite a fuss in the affected community, so I can only hope that the lessons learned stay with Netlify for a long time.

I don't have many other complaints

---

Recently, Netlify released a change to their billing structure, along with changes to the deploy workflow which would reject git repo changes from any GitHub user not tied to a Netlify user. This had several implications, the worst of which was the breaking of our workflow for pretty much every site we had set up on Netlify. Furthermore, even if we did ransom out a paid account for each of our developers' GitHub accounts, the maximum number of those accounts was just 7. We have more than seven developers and they move around between many projects.

Netlify ultimately reversed this decision, after considerable community backlash, but the damage is done. Netlify used to be the cool upstart that had a knack for knowing what its developer community needed, now I can't trust them not to randomly screw us over in the name of profit. Every company needs to make money, and honestly, some of Netlify's services are probably undervalued; however, their recent play illustrates a deep lack of understanding of their users, and a propensity towards bait-and-switch tactics that have us seriously considering other services.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Most recently, I am working with Netlify as a Freelancer and for prototyping platform/framework products I am building. Much of my perspective comes from this and my previous useage within an agency

---
(prior)

We are a creative agency that uses Netlify to develop, deploy and host most of our custom-developed websites. We typically use a JAM-oriented stack with Next.js and Sanity.io. These sites rely on Netlify build to build and deploy static assets, Netlify functions to implement the next runtime, and On-demand builders for things like image optimization and caching.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Google around to see how people are feeling about things. This could be the beginning of the end for Netlify, or it could be the impetus for a strengthening of their best qualities and a cautionary tale for their future strategy.

Easy to use and free CI/CD platform

  • March 06, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Netlify is an excellent tool for CI/CD ( continuous integration, continuous deployment). Some of the things I like about this service are as follows:-
1. Free Netlify domain with deployment in the free plan
2. Easy to setup pipeline with Github
3. Debugging Logs after each deployment
4. Free Templates!
What do you dislike about the product?
As an Indian user, I think prices for paid plans are a little too much; I believe UI can be slightly improved. Other than that, I don't think there is any improvement needed!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are looking for CI/CD solution for our web app, and Netlify works excellent! some of the benefits are as follows
1. Easy to use compare to other services
2. Good admin panel for controlling things!

Impressive and powerful hosting solution for any Jamstack project

  • July 20, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to set up and go live, very generous free plan, custom domains, ease of use administration dashboard, cloud functions - everything you need for most projects. The redirects module is potent and yet quite simple to manage.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would love to see better integration with the authentication layer out of the box.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The benefits are - fast cloud hosting with API functionality, seamless GitHub integration for deployment, which is genuinely more rapid than other providers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Very easy and straightforward to get started and get results in a relatively short time. Their services are constantly getting better and evolving with more needed features.

Fast and Reliable

  • June 19, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's free and can be deployed straight from Github. The command line interface makes it easy and fast to use for developers like myself. Another great plus is that I can host many sites via Netlify, and its so fast to deploy another one straight from the command line.

The starter plan is great as one is given all the features and tools needed to realize how powerful the platform can be. The plug-in tools, such as submit site map to google, are priceless for keeping our site known to the users of the internet. Another great tool is the checklinks, and no more 404, which helps keep our site's connections in check so we don't have any broken links as our project gets bigger.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish the free tier was larger, so that we could have longer build times for larger projects. The documentation could be slightly improved, as it was unclear what key was needed to link a build to a site. The docs were using different terms, and that was ambiguous.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are solving our own checkout flow, email subscription flow, and landing pages. With Netlify we could create our own sandbox and development site for sales funnel, starting from a landing page and ending at a checkout. If the user drops, we have his email and can deploy serverless functions with AWS step functions to re-engage the user.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Get the command line interface and learn it. That's a great way to start.

The community on Github have great examples that you can run through to get a grasp of how implement netlify and interface it with other services.

I'd recommend building sites locally and only pushing them to a Git master branch deployed on Netlify when there is a significant update. That way to don't eat your free build time for small little deployments and developments. If this doesn't make sense to you, there are definitely some tutorials out there on Github and branching.

Redefining the web hosting landscape

  • April 29, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The JAMstack methodology has changed the way websites are made for many designers and developers. Netlify's developer experience, git integrations, and atomic deployment are a dream to use. Authentication, SSL certificates and DNS are built in and easy to use as well. Their documentation and community focus are unmatched amongst their competitors. NetlifyCMS is a great start on a git powered CMS that requires no actual database.
What do you dislike about the product?
The platform started with an extremely generous free plan and has become more restrictive as time goes on. Netlify need to make money but it'd be nice to get the same benefits as when I signed up. Lambda functions are a nice feature but easier to use on Zeit/Vercel. Builds can take a long time for bigger sites with a lot of pages, support for incremental builds is not easy to do with current static site generators or CMS platforms. The expectations of features from Wordpress are not fully mirrored by Netlify yet but is getting closer with NetlifyCMS, TinaCMS, and other software. Using Netlify correctly requires integrating with external APIs or services and requires other services, hosting platforms or databases.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fast performance, improved security, and easy deployment are built into Netlify's core functionality. I can make sites in less time and with less backend headaches than before Netlify existed.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Learn about the JAMstack methodology and integrate it on existing projects or for new ones.

What do you like best about the product?
I love about Netlify that you can customize your domains with http and it does work for you when it comes to handling reviews and deploying previews.
What do you dislike about the product?
Its quite pricy and it is hard to convince companies to start using it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The technical team can easily handle the web development and setup.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
IT companies that rely a lot on the web development should consider the software because it makes life easier.

Best execution of cloud static hosting

  • May 09, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I was able to run numerous small projects without additional cost and global cdn deployment cannot be easier than Netlify.
What do you dislike about the product?
Other than static serving, dynamic processing (server functions) is kinda tricky. Compared to now.sh, it’s little bit difficult.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
There are a lot of times when small, https-protected mini-websites/services are needed while doing business. Netlify solves that niche area and also, great for small, personal projects.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is the best kind of service but in a very niche area.

Free and simple hosting for static sites

  • May 03, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
My personal portfolio site is simple enough that I don't really want to pay for hosting. Netlify works great for this, I'm able to upload a zip folder with an index.html file inside and it is instantly online. I can also choose to connect a custom domain for free, which is great for me.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not able to push updates by uploading a ZIP folder from my phone. The only way you can do it is by dragging the folder, which I can't do from my phone.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am able to push updates to static websites at an unprecedented scale (either by the web upload or by automatic deploys through GitHub).
