The functions in Barracuda Email Protection that I find the most valuable are the way it is reported and the way the solution is given for a threat if it has found one. The way it has protected malicious mails from being delivered makes a huge impact.
Threat Protection is a feature we use, which only gives us an advanced warning or an alert on any kind of malicious code coming in as an email.
Link Protection for email security is very important and very useful. We do use Link Protection extensively.
We do use Barracuda Data Protection functions, and the advantage we have is that the backed up data is protected from any possible attack that can come or any kind of hijack or data being misused. The Data Protection feature helps us ensure that the data is safe.
Barracuda Email Protection helps us prevent accidental data leaks because it gives Link Protection, so you don't click a link by oversight or mistake thinking it is genuine. This ensures that your chances of being vulnerable are gone, and the data used for protection is also safe, so we don't see any kind of data leak coming through this.
The main benefits Barracuda Email Protection provides for us are saving time and money because we don't run into any kind of attack or disruption in the mail service that we may face, including ransomware attacks. That is definitely important for us; the workflow is there but it is not that critical at this point. However, it is important to be protected and save money.
What needs improvement?
In my opinion, Barracuda Email Protection can improve by possibly adding more features towards zero trust capabilities or towards ensuring that the data protected is more secure, such as a vault. Additionally, the retrieval feature through Outlook, which is the email client that we use most, can be improved.
For the purpose for which we use it, I see no lack of function in Barracuda Email Protection. The wishlist can always be there to enhance it, but from what it is meant to do, it is fairly up-to-date and modern.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did compare Barracuda Email Protection with other products, specifically Check Point Harmony. We chose Barracuda Email Protection over Harmony because we found Barracuda Email Protection's strike rate on identifying detection was much higher. Second, we found Barracuda Email Protection's pricing to be far more comparable and reasonable than Harmony. Additionally, I found the speed of Harmony was not as good as Barracuda Email Protection.
What other advice do I have?
I would give Barracuda Email Protection a final mark of about nine. We strongly recommend users to go with Barracuda Email Protection.

We are using Barracuda Email Protection, which is an email defense solution. We utilize the Threat Protection feature, including declination, cloud features, backup, and archiving.
We do use Barracuda Email Protection's data protection features. Barracuda Email Protection's data protection feature is effective because we are using the archiving and all emails have been archived with Barracuda Email Protection archiving.
I have found value in the actionable analytics provided. The benefits my customers have seen from the actionable analytics include pulling out more data and analyzing real-time threats.
I assess the impact of Barracuda Email Protection on compliance efforts regarding security events as good. There are two issues that I can think of in terms of compliance, such as local data storage, which they do not have. We are storing the data in another foreign country, which is not how it is supposed to be. Our data must be within the South African borders. I think that compliance part is the one that is lacking there.
What is most valuable?
Threat Protection feature is a good tool and a very efficient tool. I tried competitors' solutions.
The link protection feature is good and it impacts our organization's email safety by detecting links that other security solutions would let pass through. It locks them, blocks them, and quarantines them sometimes.
I assess Barracuda Email Protection's ability to prevent accidental data leaks as good because they are using RDL and scoring. If it finds something with a low score, it is quarantined or blocked on our end.
What I use to evaluate the effectiveness of Barracuda Email Protection's email security features are metrics depending on the scoring. Barracuda Email Protection has scoring to indicate if something is spam or a phishing link, and the scoring is at 100%. If we see that it is a false positive from our end, we release it so that machine learning could improve for next time.
I think the automatic security updates are good and very effective. These updates have helped my customers counter emerging threats by allowing them to notice if there is a new interface. We started with an old Barracuda Email Protection interface, and now you can click to get to the new interface, which I found very good and helpful.
The real-time attack detection feature has improved their threat response strategies significantly.
What needs improvement?
I think Barracuda Email Protection can be improved in the reporting part. They need to do something with the reporting and it needs to be in PDF format. At the moment, it is in Excel, and the reporting is very average. What we need to do on our side is not a standard way of reporting; we need to infuse the data that is being pulled from Barracuda Email Protection to Power BI and then generate our own reports. I am not using their report.
Regarding the price, I find it pretty expensive. It is not even reasonable; it is pretty expensive because we are dealing with the South African market and our currency is not as powerful as the dollar. That is where we are struggling a little bit with this.

I would rate the technical support for Barracuda Email Protection as eight. They take long to respond, but they know their content and are good at it.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Barracuda Email Protection is straightforward and simple. The only challenge is that Barracuda Email Protection always supports cloud. We tried to implement it on-premises, but it was struggling and we had to maneuver through and resolve some conflicts so that it could accommodate on-premises Microsoft. However, Exchange Online comes through very well with Exchange Online and Microsoft 365.
What other advice do I have?
You can purchase Barracuda Email Protection directly from Barracuda. We deal with Barracuda Email Protection as a Service. I have been working with Barracuda Email Protection as a Service for about five years as well. I usually recommend Barracuda Email Protection for private and government companies. I rate this review an 8.

Barracuda Email Protection is built exactly for this kind of layered email security workflow with gateway filtering, also providing our company with API-based inboxing defense, automation remediation, and many excellent features.

Do not use an email gateway from Barracuda Email Protection because it has many modules. Barracuda Email Protection is a good fit with Office 365. I rate this product a 10 overall.

I no longer deal with Barracuda Email Protection. We only deal with the firewall, specifically Barracuda Firewall, as the product was changed to another solution.

What needs improvement?
I am uncertain if Barracuda has DLP (Data Leak Protection). They do not have DLP, I believe. The product is very basic in that regard. When we compete with FortiGate, they have DMARC capabilities. Barracuda Email Protection did not have DMARC, I think. They also didn't have DKIM. You must depend on server DKIM functionality or something similar.
In assessing Barracuda Email Protection's ability to prevent accidental data leaks, they didn't have data leak protection. I believe they lacked data leak protection capabilities. This is why my customer changed to another competitor, and we lost the project.
I think Barracuda Email Protection could improve in the future to make it more competitive by addressing the fact that Barracuda started with anti-spam and email protection, but now they are moving more to cloud-based solutions rather than device-based or hardware-based solutions. Most of the new features are for the cloud, and they work with Google and Outlook Exchange Online.
I consider it problematic that they are moving completely to the cloud. I think they should maintain something on-premise as well.
For the features I would prefer to see, DKIM is a priority. I have already protested for three years about why they cannot implement DKIM functionality.
I believe all features available in the cloud must also be available in the on-premise solution. Why would you put more features in the cloud but not in the on-premise version? The problem is their server is not in Indonesia. Their server is in the United States. In our country, you must store the data within Indonesia. This is the problem. I cannot sell your product if it is only available in other countries. This is why I cannot sell the cloud-based Barracuda Email Protection in Indonesia due to data residency requirements.

I worked with Barracuda Email Protection for approximately four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Customers chose a different product after experiencing a problem when they upgraded the firmware, which caused the system to restart multiple times during working hours.
They changed to Fortinet because of the instability caused by the firmware upgrade. I discussed this issue with Barracuda, but they only patched the problem repeatedly without solving it. After six months, they identified the issue and recommended upgrading the memory configuration, which solved the problem. I was frustrated with Barracuda because resolving something of this nature took six months. After four years of working with this customer, I lost the project because of this incident, which seemed like a preventable error.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
When it comes to functionalities and stability, Barracuda Email Protection is still a good solution. However, regarding scalability, you must change the product box if you want to increase scalability. I am referring to the on-premise hardware version, not the virtual version. If you are using the virtual version, scalability is acceptable because you simply change your subscription and gain scalability. However, with the hardware product, you must change the box. Barracuda does not limit you based on how many mailboxes or users you have, which is one of the good things for Barracuda. This is concerning the box performance. With other products, you must depend on the number of mailboxes and users involved in the protection.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate the technical support from Barracuda as three out of ten. The technical support is poor. For email security specifically, the support is inadequate. For other products such as WAF and network solutions, the support is acceptable. However, for email, the support is insufficient. You need six months to solve a problem. Every one to two months, the email system restarts. This is particularly problematic for a financial institution and banking customer.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Barracuda Email Protection is straightforward because we had been working with this customer for years already. We never had a problem with the initial setup. Everything, when troubleshooting occurred, was handled appropriately. However, during the last year, I felt the support from Barracuda was unsatisfactory.

I think the costs of Barracuda Email Protection are acceptable because I am selling another software license for anti-spam, and I have no problem with that product.

Barracuda Email Protection is an essential addition to our email security suite, and we use it ourselves and for other clients at present. It is simply the best anti-spam gateway I have used, better than Trend and Mimecast and other products I used in the distant past. As a front-end gateway with a well-thought-out user interface, it is easy to see messages from external clients that were either caught up in anti-spam or antivirus queues and explain to end-users what happened to their email.
I use Barracuda Email Protection with our clients as an excellent anti-spam gateway with the best logging display of messages I have seen. It is so easy to identify what happened to messages, which is so important when I am the person they call when things go wrong and messages are not received. It takes seconds to set up and minutes to configure. It is very easy to use for both my clients and myself.
The email spam filtering is very great, email encryption, and email archiving are all features that we support for our clients as part of our network security services packages.

It solves issues in one solution: backup, protection, and reporting. All data is backed up to the cloud, including Office 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive for all users. It protects the user inbox with a myriad of content filtering and black and whitelisting. It is simple for the IT department and other departments to find quarantined emails and release them. It has increased my organization's security posture, especially when dealing with threats from emails, making it a very recommendable tool that is cost-effective and easy to use.
Our users feel more comfortable since they receive a lot less spam and phishing emails, and they love how easy it is to send encrypted emails. Barracuda Email Protection is very easy to use since it really does not take any effort from the user other than clicking one button to send outgoing encrypted emails when needed. What is our primary use case?
I am still working with Sophos, and I moved all our systems. Not all, but when it comes to cybersecurity, I always prefer using multiple layers of security. Sophos has been on the table since the end of 2018.
Sophos is not the only solution that I'm working with. When it comes to cybersecurity, it's one of the very few areas that I always like to have diversification because each product has its own edge. I would use Sophos for the endpoint and the servers protection, Sophos Intercept X MDR, and then I use them a little bit for anti-spam, but I use a different product solution for the mail security which is Barracuda Mail Security, and the incident response and the forensics investigation and the vulnerability assessment. I also use Microsoft Defender combined with InTune.
I am working with Barracuda products, specifically the whole cloud security suite. I'm using Barracuda Email Protection. I'm using the Impersonation Protection. I'm using the Domain Fraud Protection. I'm using the Email Gateway Defense. I'm using the response. I'm using the security awareness module as well. I'm using the Vulnerability Management.
I am now working with Capital Limited. It is still with Capdrl; Capdrl is Capital Limited. We just changed the name so we increased our portfolio. Instead of doing drilling, we're doing drilling for a source of mining services.
What is most valuable?
At the moment, I am working with Sophos Cloud, Sophos Intercept X. When they introduced the XDR, we used it and then when they introduced the Optix, we used it and then we upgraded our subscription with them to MDR. So we are now utilizing Sophos Cloud Central MDR.
Both Barracuda and Sophos have developed their dashboards, and they became much better this year. For Sophos, the reports need to be more comprehensive and I think they have introduced APIs as well.
What needs improvement?
Incident response is something that requires more development from Barracuda's side.
Regarding room for improvement for Barracuda Forensics and Incident Response, for the product, developing or improving the scanning engine is important, but it's a bit tricky. I know that they are working on it heavily. The difference between Barracuda and Sophos is Sophos focused heavily on cybersecurity while Barracuda tried to increase their product portfolio. Sometimes, in some cases, this might end up with their teams being unfocused or a bit thin and stretched and super busy. However, there is room for improvement. The product is great. The teams that are supporting are great. But there is always room for improvement. Even if you have a product that you would give a rating of 10 out of 10, there is always room for improvement. The day we stop improving is the day we die.
Regarding the scanning engine, Barracuda Forensics and Incident Response has a very good feature where you can create automated flows for how to handle specific emails that are detected as incidents. This needs a bit of an improvement. That's the only component of Barracuda Forensics and Incident Response that I believe requires improvement.

I have been working with vulnerability management by Barracuda for only four months; I think this is the only solution that we introduced this year.
What other advice do I have?
Regarding the impact of machine learning algorithms on threat prediction accuracy, I have been newly using Vulnerability Manager, so I won't be able to give proper feedback about this.
I am working with Barracuda Forensics and Incident Response; but then I think they changed. Barracuda Forensics and Incident Response is not Forensics any longer. I think this is the one that got named Incident Response.
I would assess the effectiveness of Barracuda's AI-driven threat detection as seven out of 10.

What is most valuable?
The most helpful aspect for me is the out-of-the-box configuration, which is fairly good. It allows me to build my own custom rules and assists with DMARC, focusing on email security and domain reputation.
Additionally, it has stopped people from frequently asking me about blocked emails, allowing them to release emails from quarantine themselves. This feature saves me time by preventing external threats effectively.
What needs improvement?
Considering it integrates with Azure, I would like to be able to effectively set up policies where people are by default included in certain settings. For instance, for email quarantine, I can't set up a global setting. Users must go through an induction session where I guide them in configuring quarantine alerts rather than having default settings based on group membership. This seems like an oversight since they already use Active Directory details. They should assign policies based on group membership, which configures these settings by default.

I have used the solution for about five years now.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't had to use customer service much, however, when I have, it has been pretty good. They are responsive, meet their SLAs, and provide answers quickly. I had a problem with our cloud backup where it wasn't restoring a team properly. They went through the process and recommended a change in their platform to address the issue. They also gave me a workaround that worked perfectly, demonstrating their efficiency all the way up to the third line.
How was the initial setup?
It took me a day to set it up. I don't often set up new mail spam filters and relays. Nonetheless, it was fairly painless. I've since set up another domain, which was even easier, indicating there is maturation since the original setup.

Five years ago, I considered this, and Barracuda offered an educational price point with significant discounts for education. It provides good value. They also offer a range of training options, including setting up phishing scams for educational purposes.

The beauty of Barracuda Email Protection is that it is easy to manage and simple to deploy. While there is a lack of flexibility in terms of creating policies, this feature is beneficial for small customers who would prefer not to make multiple changes.
It is also known for providing excellent support, scoring ten out of ten in that aspect. However, Barracuda faces challenges with weak reporting and integration issues, particularly with their security awareness training platform.

Barracuda Email Protection needs better reporting and more robust integration with security awareness training platforms and third-party solutions. The fraud detection capability is not well-developed, with many false positives being reported, and there's no way to tune or modify the system.

Their list price is too high, but in India, the selling price is affordable at around $10 per user per year. Despite a list price possibly around $40 per user, their market price allows customers to easily buy the solution.

Barracuda Email Protection has one technology called Sentinel that helps stop various email threats, such as spam, impersonation, phishing attacks, and spoofing attacks.
What needs improvement?
The technology works on a supervised engine, but it would be better if it ran on an unsupervised engine.
