SAM knows how to provide insight into your Apps.
What do you like best about the product?
Server & Application Monitor provides us insight into our key enterprise applications out of the box. Active Directory performance, Exchange on premise, and MS SQL. We have used them all to identify the root cause of incidents. It is not always something within our control but it can gives the information we need to talk with vendors and application owners.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some many templates available with different types of components that it is a blessing and a curse. It can be hard to find the exact right mix of monitoring components for your environment.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Taking our application monitoring beyond the server level performance. Being 99% virtual, the server hardware rarely comes into play. It is all about how the application is behaving on top of all the other layers. SAM lets us look into that level. For example, AppInsight for SQL let us see into our document management application's queries on the MS SQL instance. This allowed us to build new indexes on tables to help improve the applications performance.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The licensing is by component not application. An application on a single server can have dozens of components to monitor. So make sure you size your purchase appropriately.

What do you dislike about the product?
I cant think of it for now, its been a great tool so far and with new features coming in every now and then I am pretty happy with it. SolarWinds have been pretty aggressive in releasing new features and they have done a great job till date and I hoping they would continue in the same fashion going ahead.

Fan of SAM
What do you like best about the product?
Building our own application monitors for custom programs. Being able to monitor anything and everything we need to monitor. Building alerts and custom actions to those alerts.
What do you dislike about the product?
As with all Solarwinds products there is a lot of options to SAM. You are able to do so much it can get overbearing. Just take the time and make it happen.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
One issue we have had is an application locking up. While we were working out the bugs we created a monitor and had the application restart when it went down.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a trial it is free for 30 days. A must have especially if you have home brew applications.

Solarwinds Server & Application Monitor
What do you like best about the product?
Provides a huge library of available component monitors from snmp and wmi to various script based options such as powershell. Recent additions of AppInsight monitors for IIS, Exchange, etc are incredibly useful. Automatic detection of which AppInsight template is applicable to which node keeps implementation pretty simple and straight forward.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes understanding how and where to apply certain templates can be a little confusing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have gained a much deeper level of visibility into some of our critical environments that we did not have with previous monitoring solutions.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Spend some time on the thwack.com user community, even if you don't end up purchasing the software, you can still participate there and learn a lot of stuff from the community.
SolarWInds NTA Review
What do you like best about the product?
Netflow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) is a great product for finding the who, what ,when of traffic utilization. I have seen first hand how this product has identified traffic, applications, and conversations that were causing bandwidth issues or concerns. By taking this information and reviewing it, it has saved Clients from having to spend money on upgrades or have caught rogue systems or applications performing actions during business hours. It is easy to define custom Applications and even IP groups to look for aggregate bandwidth usage.
What do you dislike about the product?
NTA is based on Layer 3 flow data, which in some environments are limited and thus missing out on seeing traffic data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
WAN Upgrades, WAN usage during business hours, general data communications and amount leaving the organization.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Have a good plan on what sources you want to configure to provide flow data into SolarWinds Orion NTA.
Solarwinds SAM continues to save the day!
What do you like best about the product?
SAM gives us the ability to leave the office and trust that our servers and applications are being monitored as effectively as possible!
What do you dislike about the product?
As with anything Solarwinds the cost can be prohibitive to some organizations however it is money well spent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are monitoring our environment for issues and use the information from SAM to catch the issues before the end user does!
Incredible tool
What do you like best about the product?
My favorite thing about this product is all the detail that is provided when monitoring a server. One of the biggest things for me is being able to look at Windows updates on the server at a glance to know which servers are potentially behind on updates
What do you dislike about the product?
I haven't really found anything that I disliked although I did find it a bit confusing at first to set up alerts
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This product has helped us maintain server patching and updates, which is a huge plus. It's also been a huge help telling us if a service is down that can effect one of our vital applications. This helps us resolve issues much sooner
Review for NTA
What do you like best about the product?
I like the granulariness (I know spelling but I like this word). To be able to drill down and see what is happening in our county offices is a must when a user calls and complains they are slow.
What do you dislike about the product?
I guess the only thing I can think of is when a user calls and we check NTA and we don't see anything. That can be disheartening because then I have to dig deeper to see why.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Problem used to be an office would call about being slow. Until NTA all we did was have them reboot their pc but now we can narrow it down to a single pc or even if it is affecting the whole state we can drill down and find what is sucking the life blood of our network. We get to tattle on people if they are listening to music like pandora.
