Insight Into Our Devices That We Didn't Have Before

  • May 26, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The fact that I know exactly what's going on with my network devices. I have backups of everything, so there's not question of whether or not I have the config of my devices. It also lets me look at revisions to check to see if I'm noticing changes or something that might have "broken" something. It also helps me with audits. I can just handover my configs in one simple place instead of having to go and look at a 100 different places.

Lastly, it's nice to have it plugged into NPM. If you notice changes in the network either bandwidth issues, bottlenecks, or weird things, I can look at the network configs to do some correlation to see if a change caused these issues.
What do you dislike about the product?
The one thing I dislike is that some devices aren't pulled in or don't pull much of value. I haven't encountered a ton of things, but you'd hope that you could get 100 % of your network devices covered. I've had issues with some Fortinet equipment, but I was able to get most resolved. Some things are somewhat manual, so it's not always 100% automatic as you might expect.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I now have backups/configs of almost all my network devices. In addition, it's allowed me to gain insight into changes that I didn't know were being made by my team. It allows you to see if your changes have impacted the network when using NPM. I didn't even realize how much easier it would be to pull network configs for our yearly security audit. I just went to the config manager tab and started pulling the configs with ease.

Piece of mind and a time saver

What do you like best about the product?
I enjoy the ease of use and setup for Network Configuration Manager. It integrates well into the SolarWinds Orion Platform. If feels like it belongs there. To set it up, just monitor the device and add credentials for Network Configuration Manager. NCM will take care of backing up configurations of your device. It will show you differences in configurations from day to day. It will also so you potential security issues with your configuration which is a huge time saver when it comes to researching CVEs and best practices.
What do you dislike about the product?
The job and automation pieces are very powerful. It would be good to find ways to integrate other types of scripting.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can perform many health checks of our devices by automating jobs to run every day. One particular case at this moment, we have a job the shows us the authentication successes for our NAC deployment. We don't have to go through logs on the NAC solution when all we have to do is refer to the NCM job results for a quick answer.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This software is as useful as the end user wants it to be. This can be as simple as set it and forget it. Another option is to take full advantage of the feature-sets and really embrace the functionality and flexibility of the job automation.

What do you like best about the product?
The tool seamlessly downloads our configs from our network devices every night allowing us to have backup copies to reference. In addition the emailed reports each day that highlight any config changes have been a huge help. It allows us piece of mind that config changes aren't taking place without our knowledge. The ability to push out config changes to many devices at once has saved a ton of time for our organization.
What do you dislike about the product?
So far we haven't found any issues with the product. It has been a huge help for us.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
NCM has saved us time managing configs and gives us piece of mind from the security aspect knowing there are no unauthorized changes taking place.

Monitor and Manage the whole organization network infrastructure

  • May 16, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor provides great support for, manage, monitor and identifies the issues of the whole network infrastructure easily. SolarWinds helps to map the whole network, and identify all the connected devices automatically. It allows users to map the unknown network infrastructure easily. SolarWinds helps monitor all the internal network traffics including branch networks as well, including bandwidth, network usage, connected devices, running services of the entire network, if having any network fault in the network it shows on the network map, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
SolarWinds provides great features and supports to manage the entire network easily, it visualizes the whole network on the administrator screen.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have been using SolarWinds for more than four years, it makes us more comfortable to manage the network. We have to manage and monitor more than four computer labs in separate locations and few servers on-site. Before informing the lab responsible persons we get alerted what are the issues and how it happens on the network. We can get alerts via email alerts for the critical servers and we have configured it and if having any of the critical situations we get a notification with root course as well, then we allow to fix the issues easily.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
SolarWinds makes more comfortability with managing and monitors the network infrastructures.

Excellent tool for backing up, monitoring, and bulking changing network device configurations

  • May 08, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
- Easy to archive configs and compare diffs over time
- Easy to script changes and push to multiple devices at once
What do you dislike about the product?
- The CVE feature isn't very helpful, I can't tell what CVEs are relevant to me
- I wish it had better support for updating firmware on Cisco and Juniper devices
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We now have a centralized repository of network device configurations.
We now can compare historical configurations to see what has changed over time
We now can quickly push changes to multiple devices at once. This saves a lot of time compared to manual work.

What do you like best about the product?
I love the ability to manage switch configurations and other features such as the baselining process, the scripting component, and other features. Our systems team and networking teams can work simultaneously in the dashboard on whatever we need.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have no real dislikes regarding NCM at the moment.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Being able to access the NCM dashboard for all things switches and network devices is nice.

Excellent NMS Platform

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to run compliance reports and automatically correct any non-compliant devices.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not a fan of the EoL or EoS reports.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Making sure we are SOX and PCI compliant from a configuration standpoint. Having a backup system for all of our CLI capable devices and a trail of configuration changes. Quickly running scripts to select devices cutting down on the time to deploy changes since we don't have to log into each device individually.

Great for standardizing a network.

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to create configuration changes based on configured custom properties (that are unique to that device or shared by several devices) is amazing.
What do you dislike about the product?
The inability to use interface custom properties to create configuration changes is the biggest gap I can find.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Network configuration backups happen almost as soon as changes are made. Old, potentially harmful, configuration are removed each night if found.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take it for a test drive and use Thwack to see what other people have done, some of it is amazing.

Great utility for monitoring our NetApp storage systems

  • April 28, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Visibility of our storage systems in one central location. We have three NetApp arrays, all of which we can see from the individual physical disk layer all the way through the agregrate, vservers, volumes and luns. Additionally, SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor integrates with our entire SolarWinds infrastructure (Virtualization Manager, Server and Application Monitor) which provides us an overall picture of our environment and impact when there is an issue.
What do you dislike about the product?
There really isn't any dislikes for this solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ensure that our storage systems, volumes and arrays stay up and do not run out of space! Real-time alerting from the system is the biggest benefit. Anytime one of our volmes becomes low on space we immediately get notified 24-7 with enough time to resolve the issue before our systems go out of service due to space issues.

Help to identify and provide solution by monitoring.

What do you like best about the product?
Solarwinds tools provide a broad Community / Forum service support for all network devices and servers, which helps you to easily solve problems. Solarwinds features a pooling system that lets you install solarwinds as many servers as you want beside solarwinds. You never restrict yourself to the database with this pooling method.
What do you dislike about the product?
The linux server can not be used as much as I know, only the windows server can be used. If you have many devices / nodes, some graphs view data very slowly, very similar to PRTG / MRTG software, web guys so slowly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SolarWinds Network Monitoring Tool has great capabilities for monitoring network devices with snmp, make models, netflow / sflow supports and simple configuration. For solar winds you can do almost all the apps you need. This great tool however has an important webgui issue. Solarwind Webgui is very slow even with a lot of polling servers. I assume mysql and asp choices are related, so it's not rapid like PRTG.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you monitor / manage the system number, learn as much information as you can and use the community / forum as possible.
