A true EdTech Partner with a flexible platform that supports excellent student engagement.
What do you like best about the product?
The platform is very intuitive and flexible, it allows our university to teach and support students in the way we want. It does not drive our learning and teaching, but supports it. Brightspace has become the heart of our edtech eco system.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is very little to dislike, both the platform and the company are excellent to work with. If I had to choose something that could be improved, it would be the first line support, but we need it so little, that it isn't a true problem.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Following the global pandemic we moved to fully online delivery, Brightspace handled this brilliantly. We have now moved to a new pedagogy where we are introducing a strong blended learning approach. As I mentioned previously, Brightspace is at the heart of this change. Student engagement has increased following the introduction instructionally designed content that Brightspace handles brilliantly.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would highly recommend working with D2L, they are a true partner, not simply a supplier. Working from procurement, through implementation onto post go live and the continued customer success support is second to none.
Excellent product and customer service
What do you like best about the product?
Solid control over the platform - you can change almost everything. The customer service is excellent, and our Account Manager has been a fantastic source of knowledge and support. Top marks from me!
What do you dislike about the product?
You can't customize the look of the platform much, which might be tricky for some brands. There are 100 different ways to do the same thing which might a bit tiring at times, however this also gives you the chance to learn the platform better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Delivery and availability of learning material; we have some students who cannot physically attend classes so we can reach them online.
Flexible LMS with Useful Tools and Competent Support
What do you like best about the product?
D2L has been extremely easy to use, with a relatively short learning curve. The flexibility built into the system has allowed us to expand its usage beyond the standard LMS. It's begun functioning as our internal campus portal, and we are exploring using it to organized groups and clubs as well. It's also proving useful as a repository for other internal groups. The API is robust and powerful but definitely requires a programmer to use. Our onboarding and support teams have been responsive and helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
Brightspace suffers from the same feature that gives it its competitive edge: flexibility. One example is user permissions. There are about a hundred plus different settings to flip on for each role at each org level. Some permissions interact with each other or need to be flipped on together. The documentation can be contradictory, as there are so many permutations. Admin access should be relatively tight, with clear knowledge of who can change things. It can be easy to break many things in Brightspace otherwise.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our primary usage for Brightspace is as an LMS. It's functioning quite well in that respect. We've also adapted it with significant effort into becoming our internal campus portal. This adaptation has been quite useful, even at this early stage. We have been able to consolidate our technology stack and improve the overall user experience.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Your product team will rise to the level of your questions. Involve users from all stakeholder groups and technology usage abilities.
Great experience from concept to implantation. Support has been excellent.
What do you like best about the product?
One stop for all internal training for our Company
What do you dislike about the product?
Reporting could be improved with data sets
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Able to deliver training to 700+ staff.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great program to deliver training to employees.
D2L Brightspace Pedagogy Delivery
What do you like best about the product?
I like the intuitive aspect of Brightspace.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of culturally responsive tools to work with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am solving equity gaps to the neoliberal approach that has been taken from the predominant western singularity of eastern epistemological perspectives and trying to recolonize the technology framework in which education is delivered.
Easy for students + great for faculty
What do you like best about the product?
D2L has great functionality and tonnes of features that allow integration from all angles. When used well, it's a breeze for students and frees up time for faculty with data capture on the backend. With training, it is incredibly useful for instructors and is easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
N/A I have used Moodle, Blackboard, and Canvas—and D2L Brightspace is the best by a long shot... It has a great interface that is simple for users to navigate and provides plenty of opportunities for engagement between student and instructor, as well as student-to-student engagement. It's great for synchronous and asynchronous, blended, online, and in-person learning.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The optimization of online learning and student engagement is up. It has a great interface that is simple for users to navigate and provides plenty of opportunities for engagement between student and instructor, as well as student-to-student engagement. It's great for synchronous and asynchronous, blended, online, and in-person learning.
So much potential but significant structural problems.
What do you like best about the product?
The feature set is rich and D2L seems to be adding more features on a regular basis. Primarily our teachers seem to like the Portfolio tool and there is some regard for QuickEval.
What do you dislike about the product?
All the features do not operate well together across the platforms. What should be simple instructor functions are cumbersome. For example, an instructor should be able to create an assignment once and post it to multiple courses. This is currently not possible. I am unsure how D2L got this point without considering these simple ways it can massively improve workflow efficiency.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are seeing errors with our Google and Office 365 integrations. Users need to clear their cache regularly it seems. The LOR is also proving problematic. Teachers will not use it under the current circumstances because it does not allow them to upload the things they want to share and collaborate on (assignments, rubrics, quizzes with images).
The benefits lie in our ability to manage courses across the division and to align the LMS with our SIS.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do a longterm pilot before any significant implementation. It takes a long time to tailor the product to organizational needs and training will be a significant investment. Consider that you will likely not see the benefits you were hoping to achieve for at least a couple of years, if not more.
Excellent Customer Service
What do you like best about the product?
Branded Help Desk and TAM. By having the 24/ 7 helpdesk - students and faculty can be served best.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Community info that is outdated. It causes issues and frustration with faculty
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allowing online, hybrid and companions to our onground courses. Faculty can use as they desire.
Lots of options with this platform
What do you like best about the product?
I like how flexible D2L is for designing and linking content
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the look & feel of how tools work varies across different tools, due to updates happening at different times. Being in the "cloud" of D2L helps get updates quickly and they are responsive to feedback.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Creating classroom spaces for students is the main purpose of this platform. Being able to use various screen sizes and browsers is helpful too - although Safari is tricky to use sometimes. Communicating with students through the various tools is essential for our work in teaching.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider how robust you need your software to be - D2L offers a lot of flexibility for instructors, whereas other platforms may have more restricted and limited options - for example, there are many ways to set up the gradebook for calculation options, design, etc. Because of this, more training is needed, but the payoff is worth it.
Suitability of Brightspace for the African market.
What do you like best about the product?
The platform is extremely user friendly.
What do you dislike about the product?
New student experience. No download option. This was a wonderful feature in the old experience for our students to be able to download content and study offline.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have managed to bring education to rural communities and to people that would never have had the opportunity to study at a college or university. Making this learning opportunity available to so many more people and enabling people to upskill themselves has led to wonderful initiatives in rural Africa that is assisting in uplifting entire communities.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Brightspace is a complete package that deals with most issues and very few plugins are required. When comparing prices, make sure you take this into account. It might seem like an expensive option, but with most other platforms you have to take the cost of all the plugins into account as well.
