A user-friendly operating system that resuscitated an old laptop computer

  • November 18, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
To put things into context, we installed Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS to replace Windows 10 on an Asus A43S laptop (purchased in 2014), which was running unacceptably slowly. In addition to changing the laptop's operating system to Ubuntu Desktop, we replaced the stock spinning hard drive with a used Crucial MX500 SATA solid-state drive (SSD), which we pulled from one of our other personal computers. We did not increase the laptop's memory (4 GB).

What we like best:
1. Installing Ubuntu Desktop from a bootable USB thumb drive was straightforward and quick, except when setting up the Livepatch service (see below). The laptop's hardware was automatically configured such that everything worked flawlessly without additional intervention on our part, e.g., the keyboard, trackpad, and wifi card.
2. Ubuntu Desktop requires fewer resources than Windows 10 to run smoothly. Changing the operating system to Ubuntu Desktop has sped up the laptop's boot-up time (under 20 seconds) and made it more snappy in everyday operations, e.g., opening files and folders, web browsing, and opening and closing applications.
3. The suite of applications included in the "normal installation" of Ubuntu, as opposed to the "minimal installation," met our needs. Nevertheless, we installed Google Chrome and VLC media player due to familiarity with these two software applications. The installation of these two applications was straightforward and similar to that on Windows 10.
4. Ubuntu Desktop's graphical user interface is user-friendly. The default modified GNOME desktop environment is intuitive and efficient on our laptop's 14-inch display.
5. Many articles and videos that address everyday tasks, such as installing the operating system, executing terminal commands, and adding and removing software applications, are available on the Internet.
What do you dislike about the product?
Despite several attempts, we could not set up the Canonical Livepatch service during installation. The rest of the installation process went smoothly without a hitch.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our laptop was practically unusable in its stock configuration and while running on Windows 10. With Ubuntu Desktop (with a hardware upgrade to an SSD), we could revive this laptop to such an extent that it now operates like any of our other computers equipped with current hardware. In this way, Ubuntu Desktop has helped to save us the expense of purchasing a new laptop computer while still functioning like a modern mainstream personal computer.

Best OS I have ever seen

What do you like best about the product?
Firstly it is open source software, that's the best thing, we could do all the modifications that we need according to end users priority and it is very secure than windows operating system
What do you dislike about the product?
It is less user friendly than windows operating systems, it requires commands to do certain tasks and not everyone couldn't do that. People with less technical knowledge users may have trouble
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Firstly cost effective, we can save lots of money by using Ubuntu and it is less prone to errors and very faster so it will increase the productivity and performance

Ubuntu - the developer first OS

  • November 15, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The power we have while using Ubuntu is unimaginable. It is as if we are the creators of the software. The ability to customize it as we want and the ease with which we can install third-party software is simply superb.
What do you dislike about the product?
Well, there is something which I don't like a bit. It is the amount of power the user has while using it. When the user doesn't know much about all those commands and if they simply run commands found online without much knowledge of them will not be good.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The main problem that Ubuntu is solving is, it is taking away all the unnecessary (or too much) graphics from the user which is present by default in a few other software. It is giving that option to the user and is letting them decide what they want.

Super fast and open source OS for developers

  • November 10, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Most of our system runs on Ubuntu. It is a free and open-source OS for everyone. The best thing about Ubuntu is its accessibility through the terminal. We can do every tasks through the terminal, which can be done in Windows. This OS is the best practitioner of coding for developers. It is easy to use and a super fast OS. We can customize it as per our needs too.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu is a little bit hard for Windows users. It is not designed for non-IT people as this operating system has no graphical interface. It is totally run over the terminal or coding interface. Other than that, I don't think it has any flaws in this operating system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mostly in my company, we work on Ubuntu as it is a powerful OS without GUI interface. The non-IT person didn't interfere with the technical person's work, as Ubuntu is a secured OS due to its terminal interface. It is cost-effective too. Ubuntu operating system is providing professional growth and becoming more productive day by day.

Review on Ubuntu Desktop

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu OS is an excellent platform for work. It doesn't catch viruses, and we can access the core of each installation file, which is very helpful in making it customized based on our needs.
What do you dislike about the product?
The folder structures that adhere after installing any software are not much appreciated. Since ubuntu Linux is worked mostly on terminals, people who do not know the terminal commands might find it difficult.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Many software like OpenFOAM is compatible only with Ubuntu. Although it works with windows, it lacks some files or is slow. Along with OpenFOAM, I have worked with many software in Ubuntu.

What do you like best about the product?
the optimization is very good unlike windows in ubuntu every app which is not running in the foreground is putted to sleep when running in the background no extra processes running and no extra loss of battery life
What do you dislike about the product?
Many software are not available on Linux if u type the wrong command for something in the terminal very bad things can happen which can essentially destroy your OS
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I can easily code and many developers-based applications and software are easily available from Linux which is a choice of OS for developers having full control of my OS is very helpful

Best free operating system

  • November 02, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is one of the solid linux builds. And the good thing is it is free, and it is very stable compared to it's analogs. It has one of best UI-s and a very good terminal.
What do you dislike about the product?
I hate the "auto updater" thingy. Unity is laggy. Sometimes kernel is getting broken. Hussle to install any third party applications(like in all linuxes). Does not support L2TP VPN natively
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is the one creating free of charge operating system to use, so you don't need to pay for the operating system to use on a computer. And it's pretty much applicable for any computer

Great OS für a variety of applications - in our case for network solutions

  • October 31, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use compared to many other distros - installed this distro on a Windows Server 2019 cluster with SCVMM and while other distros did not recognize my storage, this worked flawlessly.
Support for a variety of softwares as well as easy and maintenance.
Very sturdy and reliable software
What do you dislike about the product?
The OS overall is very reliable and has let me down very seldom. Though for a general user, it can still become a rabbit hole to go into when an issue appears and is still not as intuitive as other mainstream OSes, like MacOS and Windows
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We run a variety of network solutions on Ubuntu, such as UNMS, an intranet wiki as well as a network scanner. The OS never failed us and remote management is really easy.
