Overview
Amazon Corretto 8 on Amazon Linux 2023 provides a fully configured, production-ready environment for running Java 8 applications on AWS.
This AMI is built on a minimal installation of Amazon Linux 2023, updated to the latest security patches, and includes Amazon Corretto 8 (OpenJDK 8) runtime pre-installed and configured. Amazon Corretto is a no-cost, multiplatform, production-ready distribution of OpenJDK from Amazon. Note that Java 8 is also known as Java 1.8 due to the legacy versioning scheme used prior to Java 9. If your project requires JDK 1.8 or JRE 1.8, this is the correct version. It is designed for organizations and developers who need to maintain Java 8 compatibility for legacy systems and enterprise applications.
Key components included:
- Amazon Corretto 8 (OpenJDK 8 runtime)
- Java Development Kit (JDK) tools
- Essential build tools (gcc, make)
- Git version control
The system is security hardened following best practices. SSH access uses key pair authentication only. Unnecessary services and packages have been removed to reduce the attack surface. Automatic security updates are enabled by default.
This AMI is suitable for legacy enterprise applications, Java EE servers, Spring Framework applications, Tomcat deployments, and any workloads requiring Java 8 compatibility.
Highlights
- Legacy compatible - Amazon Corretto 8 provides long-term support for Java 8 applications with free security updates from AWS.
- Security hardened - Built on Amazon Linux 2023 with automatic security updates, key-based SSH only, and minimal attack surface.
- Production optimized - Minimal footprint with only essential packages installed. Optimized JVM settings for enterprise workloads.
